The 11th edition of the Winchester Film Festival

The 11th editions of the Winchester Film Festival will be screening films by invitation only. If you are a filmmaker that has been selected for any one or more of our previous official selections, please contact us at myfilm@winchesterfilmfestival.com if you have a new film that will be released in 2020.

As a festival, we pride ourselves on really working for our filmmakers, with open and clear communication and a professional, friendly and approachable team. We offer substantial prize money, packed out screenings and a glitzy black tie award ceremony.

If you are considering entering your film for competition this year, please be sure to read the terms and conditions of the festival, and read all about which categories you can enter your film into below.

The 2022 Winchester Short Film Festival will be the 11th edition, and is by invitation only to both British and foreign filmmakers. The festival boasts even more screenings than ever before, giving you the chance to have the general public, peers, and industry professionals view your film in the historic cultural town of Winchester, England. Alongside film screenings, we also offer top prizes of £1,000 to Best British Short Film, £500 to Best Foreign Short Film, as industry mentoring and experience prizes, media coverage and more for the Best Feature FilmBest Animated Short FilmBest Short Documentary,  Best British New Director, Best Foreign New Director and The Hampshire Prize awards.

We are proud of our Hampshire roots, and we have a special prize that is awarded to Hampshire based directors. The Hampshire Prize winner is taken from applicants for the prize categories, and cannot be entered into exclusively. If you are a talented short film maker, whether you’re part of an experience team working on a larger production, working to a reduced budget, or are starting out in your career, then our esteemed judges are on the lookout for you!  

The categories for the 2022 edition of the festival are:

Best Full Length Feature Film
Red carpet screening

Best British Short Film
Prize: £1,000
This category is open to British filmmakers only, and films may not exceed 30 minutes. We welcome films from any genre to be submitted to this category, other than animated or documentary films, for which we have dedicated award categories.

Best Foreign Short Film
Prize: £500
This category is open to non-British filmmakers only, and films may not exceed 30 minutes. We welcome films from any genre to be submitted to this category, other than animated or documentary films, for which we have dedicated award categories.

Best Animated Short Film
This category is open to both British and non-British filmmakers, and films may not exceed 15 minutes.

Best Short Documentary
This category is open to both British and non-British filmmakers, and films may not exceed 30 minutes.

The Hampshire Prize
Prize: Film Pitch and Newspaper feature
The winner of this category is taken from eligible submissions to the above categories, and cannot be be entered into exclusively. All directors who have lived, studied, or worked in Hampshire for a period of 6 consecutive months or more since January 2014 are eligible.

Best British New Director Award
Prize: Film Pitch

This category is open to British directors only, and awards those who are starting out in the industry and working to limited budgets. Films may not exceed 15 minutes in length, and the production budget may not exceed £1000 (or equivalent). We welcome films from any genre to be submitted to this category

Best Foreign New Director Award
This category is open to non-British directors only, and awards those who are starting out in the industry and working to limited budgets. Films may not exceed 15 minutes in length, and the production budget may not exceed £1000 (or equivalent). We welcome films from any genre to be submitted to this category
